PURPOSE OF THIS WEB SITE

Online reading and writing assignments for Chuck's ESL classes at Honolulu Community College, Honolulu, Hawaii, are posted at this site. These assignments are based on material which is found on the World Wide Web. These are a number of reasons to use these assignments to do online study.

One purpose for these assignments is to help students learn specific information about a topic and to provide practical experience in using that information. An example of that is learning about various search engines on the Web while getting practice in using them.

Another purpose is to provide a lot of independent reading with students having full responsibility for understanding the reading materials.

Still another purpose is to provide students with practice in writing short, one-paragraph summaries of online news stories.

An underlying purpose here is to give a lot of practical experience in using the World Wide Web for online study. Having positive online learning experiences builds up confidence and encourages people to study even more online.

Additionally, the more time spent online, the more skillful people become in using browser software to navigate the Web.

As people become more confident and skillful in navigating the Web, the more likely they are to go online on their own to find information that they need.

The Web is becoming everyone's private library, and it has become the main source of information for many people. It is becoming the singular most useful tool that a person has. The sooner everyone becomes totally at home on the Web, the better off everyone will be.
